In John 16:7, when Jesus was addressing the disciples, he said: “Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.”
Here, the comforter that He was talking about was the Holy Spirit. In a similar scripture, the Bible recorded Jesus as saying, “but ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”
So, clearly, we can see that it is a promise of God for us, which is why it is necessary for us to claim it.
2. It is the Comforter
Reeling from the previous point, you can see that Jesus Christ described the Holy Spirit as the Comforter. This means that it will always stick around us to comfort us in our lowest points and chaotic moments.
Again, John 16:13 the Bible says that “when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.”
Since, there is no better way to be comforted and inspired, then, the Spirit is a priority for us. We really need to have the experience.
3. It Helps our Intimacy with God
There is no way you will have the Holy Spirit and your relationship with God will not be smooth. Having the gift of Pentecost means that you are now teleported into a realm whereby there is a cordial relationship with God. This also means that your interaction with God will be pure and transactional. You now have an assurance that your prayers will attract answers.
Therefore, the fact that the Holy Spirit helps our intimacy with God is another reason we need to have it.
4. We Need the Holy Spirit for Evangelism
If we are true to ourselves, evangelism can yield no results without the help of the Holy Spirit. The primary reason why we need the Holy Spirit is to help us in the work that God has committed into our hands, which is evangelism.
It is important for evangelism because it is the spiritual way of fortifying ourselves against any form of challenge that might oppose us on the mission field. You never can tell how dangerous a person or place you are headed to, is. But if you have the Holy Spirit, there will be no cause for alarm.
5. Holy Spirit Brings about Signs and Wonders
For some people, seeing is believing. Not until there are raw miracles. Some sinners will not believe in the gospel you preach. This is why we should pray for the gift of the Spirit. Even Jesus Christ foresaw this in John 4:48. This is why in Mark 16:17 he says, “and these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;”
So, as a Christian, if you are keen on performing miracles, you need the spirit of God for this assignment.
