Difference Between O’Level and A’level

Let’s talk about the difference between O’level and A’level because students under it need to avoid writing what they don’t want.

For some time I have seen some people always talking about going to register for an A’level examination thinking it is O’level, where even though there are both organized by WAEC, there are also not purely the same.

However, there is a need to go into further detail and demonstrate the distinctions between the three – SSCE, O’level, and A’level.

What is O’level Result?

If you’ve heard of O’level programmes, they are tests that are scheduled to take place at the finish of secondary school studies, signifying the completion of this academic adventure. Ordinary Level is abbreviated as O’level.

In Nigeria, you are required to appear for either of the following examinations WAEC AND NECO after the senior class (i.e. SS 3), which is the final class of the second phase of secondary school education.

Of course, a candidate can write any of these examinations in SS 1 or SS 2 to have O’level results as well.

While the internal  WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, and NBAIS are intended for students who have just finished their final classes, the external (private candidates series of) GCE – General Certificate of Education is intended for students who have completed the internal exams but have some faults to make up for.

Candidates in their SS1, 2, or 3 can, nevertheless, sit for the GCE, whether NECO, WAEC, or NABTEB.

What is A’Level?

These are programs that are commonly attended after you have completed your O’level/SSCE. They are advanced post-secondary school courses whose outcomes are used to assess academic accomplishment in the courses/subjects taken.

The programs typically last one year. Candidates are expected to attend lectures at accredited study centres or universities throughout this period and to participate in joint national or international tests at the end of the courses.

Candidates who complete A’level courses and pass are expected to apply for admission to universities of their choice for the 200 level of their subjects of interest.

In contrast, O’level/SSCE applicants can only get admission to the 100 level of their courses of interest.
