Tommy Lee Osborn was born on a modest family potato farm in Grady County, Oklahoma, on December 23, 1923. He was the seventh and youngest son of Charles Richard Osborn and Mary, the parents of thirteen children. His parents, as well as several of his siblings and sisters, were musicians, and Tommy Lee began composing music at a young age. Growing up in the latter half of the 1920s, he witnessed his large family struggle through the Great Depression. When Osborn was six years old, his father relocated the family to Skedee, Oklahoma, in quest of a better-paying farm.

He met future televangelist Oral Roberts in a church in Sand Springs, Oklahoma, and the two were lifelong friends until Roberts’ death in 2009. Osborn frequently accompanied Roberts to evangelical meetings. Osborn did everything else, including playing the accordion and piano for the musical portion of the meetings, while Roberts did the majority of the preaching.

Osborn became a Christian when he was 13 years old, when his older brother led him to a Pentecostal church in Mannford. Each of his six siblings gradually moved out of the family home, until TL was the only son left living with his parents and working on the potato farm with his 60-year-old father. Until one day in the farm, he had an encounter with God and fell to his knees, praying and asking God what was going on. He declared the Lord had called him to be an evangelist while laughing and crying at the same time, overcome by what was happening to him. After finishing eighth grade, he dropped out of high school and went on the road with E.M. Dillard also an evangelist.
