How to Fill a Check | 6 Easy Steps

Perhaps you’ve never filled one before or it’s been a while since you did so you’ve forgotten certain things. No need to worry, this article is just the guide you need. I have highlighted 6 easy steps to show you how to fill a check.

How to Fill a Check

1. Fill In The Date

The first thing to do when filling out a check is to write the current date on the line at the top right-hand corner. The date notifies the financial institution and the recipient of when you wrote the check. You can write the date in letters and numbers or all in numbers. For example, May 21, 2022, or 21/05/2022.

2. Write The Name Of The Recipient

The recipient is who you are addressing the check to. So on the line that says “Pay to the order of,” write the name of the recipient. If it’s an individual, write his/her name, if it’s a company, write the company’s name. You can also ask the recipient the name you should address the check to if you don’t know it.

If you don’t know the exact name of the recipient and don’t want to ask, you can just write “Cash.” However, be careful because when a check is addressed to cash anyone can cash or deposit it.

3. Write The Check Amount In Numeric Form

The third step on how to fill a check is to write out the amount. There are two places on the check where you can write the amount you want to send. The first place is a small box located on the right side close to where you wrote the recipient’s name.

Write the amount numerically and ensure to write it clearly so the bank can subtract the correct amount from your account.

4. Write The Check Amount In Words

After writing the amount in numbers, you still need to write it in words. Below the “Pay to the order of,” where you wrote the recipient’s name, you will find two more additional lines. Write the amount you want to send out there in words. At this point make sure it corresponds with the amount you wrote numerically to avoid confusion.

5. Write A Memo/Description

Writing a memo/description is optional. This is usually used to tell the recipient what the money is for. For example, if the money is for your child’s school fees, on the memo section you can write school fees, if it’s for a haircut, you can write “haircut.”

This information is not required so you can choose to write it or leave it blank.

6. Sign The Check

The last step on how to fill a check is to sign the check. At the bottom right-hand corner of the check, you will see a place your name and signature are required. Write your name and sign it. The signature must correspond with the one you signed when you opened the account. This shows the authenticity of the check. It proves that the check was issued by the real owner of the account.
